€1600 compensation for 9 hour flight delay

A family of four were due to travel from Belfast International to Bourgas in Bulgaria on 26 June 2017 but their flight was delayed by over 9 hours, resulting in them having to sleep overnight in the airport.

Action

Upon returning from their holiday they contacted Bulgaria Air to request compensation for the delay under EU Reg 261/2004 but despite numerous emails they received no response. They also sought assistance from their travel agent but without success.

Resolution

Despite having no previous relationship with the airline The Consumer Council agreed to assist the family and we raised a formal complaint on the family’s behalf. As a result of our assistance, Bulgaria Air agreed to pay €400 compensation per passenger in compensation, totalling €1600 for the family.
